Back in the late 1980s, it was a novel thought that vodka and espresso could work together. Thirty years on and it’s surprising this compatible combo weren’t blended together sooner!
So how did this icon of late night revelry come about? Well, it was created by UK bar-tending guru Dick Bradsell in a trendy Soho Brasserie called Fred’s Club. So the story goes, a well-known model walked into Bradsell’s bar and demanded something that would “wake me up and [err, muck] me up”. (You get the gist, we don’t need to spell it out…).
Bradsell’s solution? Vodka, coffee liqueur, espresso…

The name Old Fashioned is said to have been coined at a gentleman’s club in Louisville, Kentucky in 1881. The combination of muddled sugar and bitters, bourbon and citrus rind, however, has been a popular choice since the early 1800s.

1) Combine into your glass:
- 1 maraschino cherry
- 1 part Gomme syrup
- 1 part bitters
2) Muddle by repeatedly pressing ingredients together in the bottom of the glass to release flavours.
3) Fill your glass with ice and add:
- 3 parts bourbon
- 1 part triple sec
4) Stir your ingredients together.
5) Garnish with a slice of freeze-dried blood orange and a cherry popped on top.
